I live in Liverpool and with my wife Marguerite. We have three children: Joanna, Rebecca and Stephen.

I am the General Secretary of Modern Church, the main Christian organisation promoting liberal theology in the UK. In July 2010 we changed our name from the Modern Churchpeople’s Union.

After spending a couple of years as a nurse and a social worker I worked as a parish priest, university chaplain and lecturer in Ethics from 1976 to 2002.

I contribute to the leadership of the services at St Bride’s Church, Liverpool.

I am also a member of the Green Party and Philosophy in Pubs.
